Introduction
Preserving India’s Intellectual Heritage for Future Generations
The Center for Manuscript Conservation (CMC) at Jain Vishva Bharati Institute (Deemed-to-be University), Ladnun, Rajasthan, was established in April 2019. Sponsored by the National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM) under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India (currently known as the Gyan Bharatam Mission), the center operates within the Vardhman Granthagar (Central Library) of the institute.
India’s priceless intellectual wealth is deeply embedded in its manuscripts, spanning religion, philosophy, literature, history, Ayurveda, astronomy, mathematics, and grammar. Written on palm leaves (Tadpatra), birch bark (Bhojpatra), and handmade paper, these ancient texts face continuous threats from climate conditions, humidity, dust, insects, and improper handling. The CMC was founded to counter these threats through state-of-the-art scientific conservation and restoration.
